One of California’s largest public employee unions is targeting Inland Assemblyman Mike Morrell.

In mailers that hit mail boxes in the 63rd Assembly District this morning, the California State Council of Service Employees International Union criticizes Morrell and his position on the state budget.

Featuring photos of four men in orange jail jumpsuits, the mailer states, “Some People Are Very Happy … About What

Assemblymember Mike Morrell’s Budget Ideas Will Do To Public Safety.”

Flip it over and the mailer asks, “Why Won’t Assemblymember Morrell Stop Police Layoffs and Protect Public Safety?”

The mailer says thousands of police officers, firefighters and paramedics will be laid off if the lawmakers have to make an additional $10 billion in budget cuts.

Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, backs the proposal Assembly Republicans made this month to rely largely on spending cuts and increased tax revenue to overcome the state’s budget deficit. Assembly Republicans do not support Gov. Jerry Brown’s plan to ask voters to extend higher taxes on sales and vehicle registrations.

“It is critical that we take responsible steps to balance our state budget. I have opposed any taxes that will take more money out of the pocket of hard-working Californians and will continue to do so,” Morrell said in a statement earlier this month. “This Roadmap protects Californians from additional taxes while ensuring that our children receive needed educational funding. The Roadmap also keeps our priorities in order by funding our local law enforcement to keep our families safe.”

UPDATE: Morrell’s office released a statement late this afternoon responding to the mailer.

“I welcome any group to communicate with the Constituents of the 63rd district. That is one of the great aspects of our political process,” Morrell said. “Here are the facts: I fully support public safety and keeping our communities safe. Because of this, I have joined with Assembly Republicans to propose a budget that fully funds both public safety and education – without raising taxes. We must let citizens keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets.”

Editor’s Note: Once again, please click to read more. Naomi will thank you.

The United States government estimates that up to 27 million persons worldwide are trafficked for the purpose of forced labor. Close to one million of these victims are children who are forced into the sex trade while other victims work under guard in sweat shops, as domestic help, and in agricultural businesses. Between 15,000 and 17,500 new victims are brought in the United Stateseach year, making the United Statesone of the top three destinations for human traffickers.

On October 18, 2010, former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law SB 657, the “California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010. Beginning in January 2012, the law will require manufacturers and retailers in Californiato ensure their supply chains are free of slavery and forced labor and that their policy be posted on their websites.

To bring further attention to an issue that is now growing faster than drug and weapons smuggling, two Inland Empire Assemblymen, Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) and Tim Donnelly (R-Twin Peaks) introduced ACR6, a resolution declaring January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. ACR6 also names February 1 as “California’s Free from Slavery Day.”

It was a nice surprise to go to my mailbox tonight and find a thank you note from Mike Morrell. It’s probably the third such note I have received from him since he started his campaign. From the beginning I have been so impressed with Mike and the way in which he conducts his life. I am very happy that he won the Republican primary for the 63rd Assembly District. I know he will make a great Assemblyman.

After Neil Derry, I believe Mike was the next candidate to provide iePolitics with information about his campaign. As with Neil, it was his expert strategists who won the campaign for him, but I know we contributed a few votes and we appreciate the fact he allowed us to do it.

Congratulations Mike!

As a small business owner who has lived and worked in the Inland Empire for over 30 years, I have gained the experience of successfully creating jobs – something our state badly needs in the face of double digit unemployment. I have signed the “No New Taxes Pledge,” and am endorsed by the National Tax Limitation Committee. The California Small Business Association has also endorsed me, because I am committed to spurring job growth and improving the economy by preventing new regulations and reducing the litigation and tax burdens that cripple small businesses. The government must begin living like we do – “within our means.”

I am conservative economically, politically and socially. I have been married to my wife Joanie for 32 years. We are pro-life, support the Second Amendment, and believe in traditional family values. Our daughter Kristen is a graduate of the Focus on the Family Institute, our son David recently graduated from law school, and our youngest, Matt, attends Hillsdale College.

I am concerned that our greatest enemy today is an insidious progressive agenda that weakens our nation from within: economically, politically and morally. The message we hear from progressive leaders is that “government is the solution.” History, however, proves otherwise. Big government is not the solution; rather, it is the problem. As government expands, liberty contracts and freedom is lost. Politicians believe elected office is about “they the government,” and have forgotten those three foundational words written in our Constitution, “We The People.”

In order to bring California back to the people, I will work to cut government spending and taxes. Revenue is not the problem – spending is. Cuts must be implemented before economic growth can begin. I will focus on our children who have become an afterthought in Sacramento by reprioritizing our commitment to education. I will also fight against the liberal environmentalist agenda that has burdened our farmers and residents with extreme regulations like job-killer bill AB32 (an ill-timed piece of legislation which promises to drive hundreds of thousands of jobs out of California). I will vote to keep prisoners in prison, rather than consent to the liberals’ plan for ‘early release,’ and I will be a firm, dependable voice to stop the billions of dollars spent annually on those here illegally.

My aim is to restore conservative principles in Sacramento. I respectfully ask for your vote on June 8, and hope you will contact me to learn more.

The 63rd Assembly District is one of two hotly contested Assembly seats in San Bernardino County. There are seven Republicans vying for the Republican nomination, six of which are actively campaigning for the seat. They are: Mike Morrell, Paul Chabot, Acquanetta Warren, Pat Gilbreath, Henry Nickle, and Don Kurth.

This was both an easy and hard decision for me, not as to whom to vote for, as I don’t live in the district, but rather whom to support. There are several very well qualified candidates.

There is only one candidate that I do not want to see win and that is Don Kurth. He was a convicted drug felon in his 20s and served prison time. Later in life he has had issues with domestic violence. He has also had some serious financial problems. But more important to me than any of that, Don, along with his campaign manager Jessica Austin, and campaign consultant Chris Jones, has run the single most unethical and dirty campaign in all of San Bernardino County. None of the three of them appear to have any ethics or integrity whatsoever. What they have done is shameful. And it would be shameful if a RINO such as Don Kurth received the Republican Party’s nod.

Any of the remaining five candidates would serve us well in the state assembly. However, a couple stand out. Acquanetta Warren, Pat Gilbreath and Henry Nickle would all make fine assembly members. But there are even better candidates.

Paul Chabot has been beaten up on this blog many times by the medical marijuana crowd. I disagree with Paul myself on that issue. Paul’s bigger issue is that he looks like he is 12 years old! Of course, he is not. If I remember correctly he is about 35. And he is an over-achiever, having accomplished much in those years. I have no doubt he would work his butt off for his district if elected.

My vote, if I could vote in the 63rd District, would go to Mike Morrell. Mike is a fiscal conservative who is firmly committed to no new taxes. He strongly believes in securing our borders and not giving amnesty to those here illegally. He is pro-death penalty. And as a businessman for many years, he is pro-business. But for me, more important than all of the above, is the level of integrity I see in Mike. He is a strong family man and a devout Christian who walks the walk. Those are not catch phrases for him but lifestyle choices.

I have gotten to know some of Mike’s staff, Grace, Kris, and Daniella, and found them to be just like him: down-to-Earth, good people. They reflect his values and what he finds important in life. Mike would serve us well in the State Assembly. We would never have to worry about him embarrassing us with scandal as he would serve with dignity and honesty.

The June election cycle is far from over and already my stomach is turning at the vicious tone of recent political attack ads. Though I have been largely silent over the past year while fighting my own battles, I will not stay silent when I see grave injustices being perpetrated.

I want to very publicly condemn a recent attack ad sent by Assembly candidate Don Kurth against my friend, Mike Morrell. I call on Don to publicly apologize to Mr. Morrell, and refrain from the disgusting practice of tearing down another candidate for one’s own self interest. Mike Morrrell doesn’t deserve this. I know Mike Morrell, and he is a good man. His wife and children do not deserve to be humiliated for nothing more than being successful, God-fearing people who never harmed anybody. Sometimes politics is downright disgusting.

Never in my life have I seen more distortions and outright falsehoods than I have seen coming out of Mr. Kurth’s campaign. From what I read daily in those mail pieces that Don paid good money for, Mayor Kurth has single-handedly led Rancho Cucamonga to greatness. Baloney!! Mayor Kurth hasn’t led ANYTHING. All of the leaders and citizens of Rancho Cucamonga have made it a great city. I desire that Don Kurth remain in the city and finish the job he started as Mayor.

As far as I can detect, the Don Kurth I know and the Don Kurth as described by his campaign manager are completely inconsistent. To be perfectly blunt, one could say that this makes Don Kurth a complete fake. I am very disappointed with the job he has (or hasn’t) done as Mayor. Again, I call upon Mayor Kurth to apologize for the negative tone of his campaign and refrain from misrepresenting himself to the voting public. To all candidates: tell the public what’s right with your candidacy, not what’s wrong with your opponents.

Lastly, I want all the 6,000 families who make up “Friends of Rex Gutierrez” to know that Mike Morrell is a good and decent man. Please don’t be led to believe otherwise. Don, I expect better from you. There’s still time to finish this campaign with honor.

Former GOP Chairman Endorses Morrell

Upland, California – Margaret “Maggie” Stewart, former chairman of the San Bernardino County Republican Party, has endorsed conservative businessman Mike Morrell for the Republican nomination for the 63rd Assembly District.

“Mike Morrell has been a successful business owner and created many jobs over the past 25 years,” said Stewart. “He will vote against government bureaucracy in an effort to make California ‘business friendly’ again and oppose new taxes and spending.”

Continued Stewart, “Mike is a caring family man who will protect our families and people of faith who support traditional values. I am honored to have this opportunity to share with you what an outstanding candidate we have for the 63rd Assembly District.”

“Maggie helped lead our party when Republicans last captured a majority in the State Assembly and I know that we are poised to do it again,” said Morrell. “Californians are tired of the reckless fiscal policies that have destroyed our economy and laws that erode our traditional institutions. We need to get back tot he basics of government’s role in society.”

Maggie Stewart served as chairman of the San Bernardino Republican Party for two terms from 1993-1997.

Dick Mountjoy Announces Support for Mike Morrell

“A conservative we can count on.”

Redlands, California – Conservative icon Dick Mountjoy has declared his support for Mike Morrell in the race for the 63rd Assembly District, currently held by Bill Emmerson, who is term-limited.

“More than ever, we need conservative leadership in Sacramento and I believe that Mike Morrell is the kind of leader that we can count on to make tough decisions and fight for our conservative principles,” said Mountjoy. “Mike cares deeply about traditional values and the sanctity of life, he also cares about the direction our state is headed and that is why I am supporting him. I urge all conservatives to join me.”

“Senator Mountjoy has been one of the most principled public servants to serve in the legislature and Sacramento could use his voice in dealing with the tough decisions that need to be made to turn our state around,” said Morrell. “Likewise, I will push conservative solutions to problems created by liberal policy-makers, you can count on that.”

Mountjoy served as the mayor of Monrovia from 1968 to 1976. He served in the California State Assembly from 1978-1995 and the California State Senate from 1995-2000. In 2006, he was the Republican nominee against Diane Feinstein for U.S. Senate.

Mike and his wife Joanie live in Rancho Cucamonga. They have been married for 32 years, and together they have three children, Kristen, David and Matt. Mike is president of Provident Realty and has been involved in numerous community organizations including the YMCA, Inland Empire Prayer Breakfast, City of Hope, Pacific Justice Institute, and California Republican Assembly.

Outraises all other candidates this quarter

Upland, California – Conservative candidate Mike Morrell, a 25-year small businessman and job creator, far outpaces his rivals for the Republican nomination in district-based donors. The March 17 finance report shows that he has the strongest base of local support and the best ability to encourage new voters to become involved in the Republican party.

“No one has worked harder than Mike to reach out to 63rd District voters at the grassroots level and that’s reflected in his broad support from district donors,” said advisor Jason Roe. “Mike will outwork anyone else in the race and in Sacramento. He will be a champion for prudent conservative economic policies that will balance our budget and make our state competitive again.”

Morrell, who is endorsed by the California Small Business Association, has 182 donors residing in the 63rd District. Candidate Don Kurth has only 57, Acquanetta Warren only 55, and Paul Chabot 12, giving Morrell a 3-1 advantage over Kurth and Warren and a 15-1 advantage over Chabot.

Morrell also outraised his opponents, hauling in over $48,000

California Small Business Association Endorses Morrell

Upland, California – The California Small Business Association (CSBA), which represents over 203,000 California small business owners, has announced its support of Mike Morrell for the 63rd State Assembly seat currently held by Bill Emmerson.

“We believe your commitment to the future of small business is deserving of the support from our organization,” said President Betty Jo Toccoli, “and you will do a great job representing us effectively in the Legislature.”

“I am grateful for the support of the CSBA and for all the hard work they put in on behalf our state’s entrepreneurs and job creators,” said Morrell. “The business climate in California has gone from bad to worse and while states like Arizona and Texas fight hard to take our jobs, it seems our government is working just as hard to lose our jobs. If we are going to reduce unemployment, expand our economy, and improve quality of life, we must change the hostile business culture in the state. I am committed to doing that.”

CSBA is a grass-roots, non-partisan, small business advocacy organization founded in 1980 by the 1980 California small business delegates to the White House Conference on Small Business. Its mission is to provide a voice for California small businesses and stimulate the creation of jobs and the economy of California.

Mike and his wife Joanie live in Rancho Cucamonga. They have been married for 32 years, and together they have three children, Kristen, David and Matthew.

Dear Friends,

In California, a lot is at stake in 2010. While many in politics tax our lives to the hilt, new candidates speak of “fixing the problems” in Sacramento. But will these same men and women try to fix the problems with more government programs or more public spending?

I have raised my family and built my business on the American pillar of self-government. If elected to our State Assembly, I will keep my word to fight to end the job killing regulations, the anti-family laws, and the new taxes passed by the liberals in our State Assembly. If not, I will resign. Period.

This commitment is why my campaign has progressed so far! My endorsements include Numerous Small Business Owners, Lewis Uhler of the National Tax Limitation Committee, Pastor Rob Zinn, Ron Prentice of the California Family Council, and the Stalwart Conservative, Former Senator Ray Haynes.

Will you join me in the home stretch? With the Primary here in California quickly approaching, I need your help! Together, we can save our state. And we can show Sacramento that Americans will not lose their rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

“We Trust Conservative Mike Morrell”

Upland, California – The National Tax Limitation Political Action Committee, one of America’s leading taxpayer protection organizations, has announced its endorsement of Mike Morrell in his race for the Republican nomination for the 63rd Assembly District.

“We trust conservative Mike Morrell to hold the line on taxes and spending in Sacramento and to protect the hard earned money of California families,” said Lew Uhler, president of the National Tax Limitation Committee.

Morrell has committed to tackling the out-of-control spending in Sacramento as a member of the Assembly: “The problems facing our state have little to do with revenue; we pay the highest sales tax in the nation and the second highest income tax,” said Morrell. “We need to stop the spending and reckless budgeting that has little in common with the reality of state revenues.”

Mike and his wife Joanie live in Rancho Cucamonga and have been married for 32 years. Together they have three children, Kristen, David and Matthew.

We hear today that the United States houses between fifteen and twenty-five million illegal immigrants. An estimated 32 percent of these individuals live in California, as our state offers assistance up to $11.2 billion annually. In light of the staggering fiscal and social problems inherent in these figures, what position should we Republicans take?

Certainly, we recall that ours is a nation of immigrants. From the Eastern seaboard Lady Liberty calls, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Truly, America is unlike any other nation, with neither racial nor ancestral borders to define us. Yet our founders determined a set of immovable principles, both political and moral, and these became the “ties that bind.” These principles found clear expression in our early writings.

The Declaration of Independence describes a process of ideological (rather than genealogical) nation-making. For Americans, the first principle was “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” The second principle was government by consent, which exists to ensure the safe exercise of these rights. To the modern world, the American experiment of equality and consent presented a novel method for making citizens.

The Founders believed that a people’s’ ability to become citizens would not depend upon their race, gender, or national origin, but rather upon their belief in human equality and their commitment to principles of American government. Do not come, they thought, if you deny the God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That word “happiness” signified the good life, or living virtuously. A man could not understand happiness after living too long under despotism, or becoming accustomed to vices of fraud, deceit or crime. Content under tyranny externally, or dominated by the “tyranny of the passions” internally, some strangers lacked the humane self-assertion and noble self-restraint needed to maintain liberty and government by consent. Our founding generation could not overlook the absence of such virtues—are you and I willing to risk falling short?

Today, we speak highly of “respect” to promote a free and decent society. The founders envisioned the same goals, but reserved their respect for those who exhibited honesty, truth, gratitude, industriousness, assertion and love of fellow men and women. This attitude built on the centuries-old ideas of Plato’s Statesman, which asserted that the proper virtues must be woven into the souls of all citizens if they hoped to achieve a free and just society. Similarly, with vastly different backgrounds, but fortified with common virtues and shared purpose, people from a multitude of countries could be bound together as citizens in every era of our history. As Lincoln, in studying this condition of strangers on our shores, noted:

If they look back through this history to trace their connection with those days by blood, they find they have none, they cannot carry themselves back into that glorious epoch and make themselves feel that they are part of us, but when they look through that old Declaration of Independence, they find that those old men say that “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” and then they feel that that moral sentiment taught in that day evidences their relation to those men, that it is the father of all moral principle in them, and that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh, of the men who wrote that Declaration—and so they are. That is the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world.

To this sentiment should we return as we continue the debate over immigration.

Americans on both sides of the aisle believe in equality. Today, then, how do we answer those on the Left who argue for open border policies? First, we must examine the motives of those who push for a “quick” pathway to citizenship. Recent polling and statistics from American Spectator and other publications suggest that the majority of children (born to American citizens between 1981 and 2000) grew up with conservative homes and religious backgrounds. Over the next decade, this will represent a Republican voter base five million stronger than that of the Democrats. Are we surprised when our opponents champion the right to vote for those here illegally? After years of legislation for Planned Parenthood and similar agendas, the liberals have finally run up against what are to them disconcerting demographic trends.

Second, as Americans, we cannot afford to stoop to these political games as the integrity of our national character hangs in the balance. Instead, let our first objective be to restore our commitment to the political principles of the American Founding, and to return to the notion that a loyalty to those principles is an essential part of making new citizens. Only then can we uphold uniform rules of naturalization, and secure our nation for ourselves and for future generations.
