Examiner.com: Local political leaders remember 9-11

(PALM SPRINGS) – For many of us September 11, 2001 seems like yesterday.  It is hard to believe that ten years has a passed since we woke to the news that the World Trade Center and Pentagon were under attack.  The Cold War had been over for more than a decade and few Americans still lived with the fear of being attacked by a foreign enemy on our own soil.

Like most Americans, those that we have elected to represent us have not forgotten what that tragic day has done to our country.  Here are a few excerpts from statements from Assemblyman Paul Cook and Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack was serving her first full term in Congress after having completed the previous term of her late husband, Sonny Bono.  In her statement today, she discusses the importance of freedom.

“For me, 9/11 brought Americans together like few other events in our lifetime.  I was only a mile or so away when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon at 9:37 in the morning.  I’ll never forget it,” Bono Mack said.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Bono Mack Offers Prayers for Japan Earthquake Victims

Washington, D.C. –  In the aftermath of today’s tragic events in Japan, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement reminding residents about the importance of being prepared in the event of a major earthquake:

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (C-45) today introduced legislation to abolish the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.  The center is overseen by the Department of Justice but, for the most part, funded by the Department of Defense.

The NDIC was established by Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 1983 and was placed under the control of the United States Attorney General.  It was created to “coordinate and consolidate drug intelligence from all national security and law enforcement agencies, and produce information regarding the structure, membership, finances, communications, and activities of drug trafficking organizations.”

According to its website, the NDIC currently employs 120 analysts who are assisted by detailees from the Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons.  The site states that its mission as “NDIC supports the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a component of the Executive Office of the President, by preparing assessments and providing briefs addressing drug issues of national concern. NDIC also provides analytical support to the ONDCP-designated High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTAs) to assist the HIDTAs in preparing their regional drug threat assessments.”

Hi, I have some important news to share with you.

This week, we delivered on a promise.   The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to repeal government-run health care which was signed into law by President Obama in 2010 without any input from Republicans.   While it’s uncertain what will happen in the U.S. Senate, it’s time to go back to the drawing board and start over.  And we should begin by observing one important golden rule: the doctor-patient relationship is sacred.   Decisions about treatment options should be made by patients and their families – not by bureaucrats in Washington.   Instead, let’s do something novel: let’s take the best ideas of both Republicans and Democrats and give Americans the kind of common-sense reforms that enjoy wide-spread support here in California and across our nation.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs) announced the appointment of Ken Johnson as her Senior Advisor for Policy and Communication.  In a written statement issued today, Bono Mack said of Johnson,   “As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee since 2001, I have known and respected Ken for nearly a decade.  He has a proven track record for getting things done, and he has worked tirelessly on issues that deeply impact people all across America.  I am thrilled to have him on our team.”

From 2001-2004 Johnson served as deputy chief of staff and chief spokesman for the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  According to the release, he played an important role in Congressional investigations of corporate corruption, including Enron, WorldCom, Health South, Global Crossing and Arthur Anderson.

Washington, DC— This week, as the U.S. House of Representatives convenes for the 112th Congress, one of the first orders of business is to adopt the new rules of the House. Initiatives Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), the incoming Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, introduced last fall to make the House committee and subcommittee process more transparent and accountable to the people are present in the new rules package for the 112th Congress.

Incoming Chairman Bono Mack introduced H. Res. 1675 last fall, which would require live internet broadcasts of all markups of bills and resolutions in committees and subcommittees and provide the texts of these measures to be made accessible in a timely manner on the official, public committee websites. The Republican Conference adopted the rules package for the new Congress containing Bono Mack’s recommendations and the full House approved the rules Wednesday.

Endorsements, candidates go for them like a kid at a candy store. Voters look for them as indicators that candidates are for or against policy positions. However when organizations are inconsistent with their mission statements it clouds the meaning of an endorsement in an election.

Bono Mack Introduces Tax Relief Bill for Those Left without Work

Washington, D.C. – In an effort to help provide tax relief for Americans facing extreme financial pressure in these tough economic times, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today introduced legislation (H.R. 4718) to suspend federal income taxes on those Americans who have been forced to collect unemployment compensation due to the loss of jobs and/or inability to find a new job as a result of the current tough economic climate.  Bono Mack issued the following statement: 

 

“This legislation offers tax relief to individuals and families who have been hardest hit by this economic crisis and helps them with additional resources to make ends meet during these tough times,” said Bono Mack.  “Over 10% of Americans are currently unemployed and over 14% of local residents in Riverside County.  This bill will provide help at a time when individuals and families need it the most.

Bono Mack:  Partisan Health Care Overhaul is Wrong Approach

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Emphasizing overwhelming opposition to the partisan health care bill to initiate a government-run overhaul of America’s health care system, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today sent a letter to the President and Congressional Democrat leadership calling for a meaningful, bipartisan approach that will make health care more affordable and accessible to the American people.
