If my piece yesterday sounded like I was a bit perturbed, it is because I was perturbed and irritated with newspaper reporters/publishers and politicians who try to claim they are taking the high road when they are just as corrupt or more corrupt than those they report about or prosecute. Let’s face it. Frank Pine is not the least bit interested in ending corruption in San Bernardino County. Without corruption stories, the Sun is nothing.

Good government does not make headlines. Corruption stories sell newspapers and the more sensational, the more papers sold. I can’t wait to hear these newspaper execs cry foul play when a judge rules that their one-sided sensationalized reporting has tainted the jury pool to the point that the Colonies cases must legitimately be moved out of county. These guys do not seek justice, they seek revenue.

If Frank Pine was truly interested in seeing corruption cleaned up in this county, he would pursue the stories for which he has been provided documentation and eyewitness accounts from victims. The same goes for the Press Enterprise’s Cassie MacDuff.

It was really hard to read the two PE fluff pieces yesterday on Supervisor Josie Gonzales and former Supervisor Dennis Hansberger. Have the reporters forgotten all of the questionable circumstances around Hansberger and his staff, such as destruction of public records or FPPC violations? If I remember correctly, Josie has been cited by the FPPC as well. Was there ever a newspaper story about that?

Did anyone ask Josie why she was “hiding” from Jim Brulte and Jeff Burum one day and dancing on the tables at a nightclub the next? There were lots of witnesses so it’s not like they even tried. Or perhaps it is because their reporting is more one-sided and jaded than that of the blogs they so quickly and easily disparage.

As for Mike Ramos, talk about the kettle calling the pot black. I don’t believe a single Colonies figure has had as many FPPC complaints sustained against him as Ramos has had. But as I said in my comment on the story, “Ask and you shall receive.” But you might want to remember the old adage about being careful about what you ask for. Elected officials are elected officials and campaign contribution limits will affect all elected officials, not just those Mikey doesn’t like.

Has anyone looked at Mikey’s 460s recently? I think if you add up the sums, there are contributors who need special favors who gave him more than $100,000 cumulatively. But that doesn’t count because he is not trying to send himself to prison . . . where he belongs.

I will not publish the Sun‘s endorsements here. You will have to look for them yourself. I am completely disgusted with them. You can tell there was no point in challengers even bothering to show up.

For a paper that sometimes rails against county corruption, one would think all Board of Supervisors-appointed incumbents would be looked at as suspect. But the paper is endorsing incumbents across the board, except maybe superintendent as that has yet to be announced. Instead of being a watchdog for the public, it has become a lapdog for the Board of Supervisors and appointed officials.

So, what we all want to know Frank Pine, what does Mike Ramos have on you? Give it 60 days and you will so regret succumbing to threats rather than giving your readers the truth. You know we are right. You have been given evidence of the truth and have chosen to ignore it. Shame on you.

After receiving a few feedback comments I decided to write a follow-up piece to my first story on this topic in a effort to make my point clearer.

The op-ed written by Frank Pine, Editor of the San Bernardino Sun / Inland Valley Daily Bulletin titled “Whose attorneys are they?” available here lists a myriad of block walls county supervisors “could have” employed to avoid waiving attorney-client privilege related to the Colonies Settlement matter. A waiver was requested by San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos and California Attorney General Edmund “Jerry” Brown in order for their prosecutors and investigators to access documents and lawyers who worked on the litigation.

County supervisors didn’t meet Pine’s implied expectations of obstruction. Instead the supervisors voted to grant a limited waiver of privilege in order to facilitate the completion of the investigation, which likely won’t be anytime soon. After all, District Attorney Ramos and Attorney General Brown have elections to deal with, and nothing related to the investigation can be allowed to blow-up until at least Mid-November.

While Ramos’ reelection will likely be resolved in five weeks, Brown must continue on until November where he presumably faces Meg Whitman. Whitman is someone with the means to exploit Brown being tied to Ramos’ hip when the music stops and Ramos implodes.

The final part of Pine’s aforementioned op-ed says it more clearly than any other part of the column. It reads as follows:

If that were to happen, prosecutors might have to make good on their promise to “immediately initiate our legal remedies in a court of law, so that we can pursue and conclude our investigation promptly and completely,” as Senior Assistant Attorney General Gary Schons wrote to supervisors last week.

The best part of Schons’ letter is, however, not that. It’s a quotation from James Madison (from a letter to W.T. Barry dated Aug. 4, 1822), and it speaks, in my opinion, to the whole mess. Here it is:

“A popular Government without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives.”

Exactly right Mr. Pine.

The people need to be armed with power and knowledge.

County Supervisors however continue to keep from the public “back-up material” related to a four-month long $140,000 investigation into the conduct of Ramos. While a so-called report on the investigation cleared Ramos. Insiders describe the investigative interview notes as devastating.

Was the report a “white wash”? It’s sad Mr. Pine. You seem as if you could care less. Is this true? What happened to your self-proclaimed duty to the public?

Don’t county supervisors have a legal duty to address misconduct in the workplace by a countywide elected official, particularly if the conduct has a high probability of re-occurrence? Do the same supervisors expose the taxpayers to strict liability should the problem be covered-up and corrective action not taken?

So Mr. Pine. What’s the difference between knowing about the Colonies Settlement or misconduct involving District Attorney Ramos who you routinely protect?

You are correct Mr. Pine. People have a right to know. Your newspaper even has in its possession interviews and confirmation of some of Ramos’ shenanigans and you have and continue to cover for him. I also certain your reporters,if they have any skill or sources, are hearing the chatter involving Ramos.

You know somethings up.

Matters on the Ramos front may seem quiet right now. But, it just seems that way. Like I said in my last post, things aren’t always as they appear.

Just don’t sound appalled and shocked when the table is turned on Ramos and the truth about the DA and his motivations come out. No one will believe you are sincere.

It would be better if you just didn’t say anything at all and went on your way.

The Press Enterprise at least seems to be taking a more neutral or objective stance on many of these subjects. You think the the Press Enterprise might smell the stench?

Sun / Daily Bulletin newspaper Editor Frank Pine put in some extra effort over the past few weeks.

He even inked an op-ed column on the subject.

Pine and his newspapers spent their time hammering away at the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors over their slowness to waiver “Attorney-Client Privilege” protecting documents and lawyers involving the $102 million Colonies Settlement from being accessed by state and county investigators.

The county has filed suit against three entities to recover funds paid out in the settlement and county supervisors were concerned a waiver might damage the county’s case.

Investigators wanted and were eventually granted access to the materials in an effort to determine whether or not any wrongdoing occurred.

Pine’s cry for transparency and open government are commonplace in his news publications.

A looming question is whether or not Pine will support the release of materials related to a county investigation into the conduct of District Attorney Michael A. Ramos involving DA employee Cheryl Ristow.

InlandPolitics has learned Ristow’s Rancho Cucamonga-based attorney James Reiss has requested the material.

Ristow is expected to file a civil action before an August deadline.

Pine’s newspaper has been well aware of many of Ramos’ escapades but has remained steadfastly silent on the subject while at the same time blindly supportive of the two-term DA.

Rumors are quietly circulating that others have come forward on various matters regarding Ramos. Those matters while not likely to affect Ramos’ reelection, won’t be so irrelevant in the months following.

It looks like The Sun newspaper is feeling a little self-conscious these days.

Editor Frank Pine, the subject of much criticism on this blog over the past several months for his rose-colored glasses when it comes to his newspapers non-reporting of stories for which they have facts in hand is trying to defend his actions.

Are Pine’s rose-colored glasses the problem? Or is there an agenda?

It sure hurts when questions like this become focused on a local newspaper.

Pine has just now penned a couple op-eds on how their editorial board functions, and how confidential sources are “red” flags……… How they take extra strides in reporting accurate fact-based news stories.

Oh please, spare us the diatribe.

Most newspapers have some degree of self-serving interests in the way they write their news stories. Heck, who doesn’t.

The Sun along with other Inland Empire print media live in a dream world of believing they shape public opinion by how they spin the news. A clearly dishonest foundation to embark from.

The Sun and it’s affiliated newspapers, and even the Riverside Press Enterprise, have the unsavory habit of locking themselves into positions to the point of when proven wrong they just stick with it regardless, and in the end come out looking bad.

To read the rest of the story, click here.
