San Diego Union-Tribune: State GOP still in denial over wipeout

The pro-Republican wave in the rest of the nation on Nov. 2 is likely to pay dividends for the party for years to come, with the GOP so strong in the state legislatures, which control post-2010 census redistricting, that gerrymandering alone may yield 20 more House seats for the party in 2012. But in California, Republican prospects could scarcely be grimmer.

Exit polls showed independent voters were overwhelmingly opposed to all but one of the statewide GOP candidates. Independents were key to Republican gains elsewhere.

Members of the Republican National Committee have a lot on their plates in the early part of next year when the membership reconvenes for its biannual reorganization.

Chief among the RNC’s concerns—and what will likely remain at the forefront of media focus—is whether incumbent chair Michael Steele will remain in his perch. Steele’s numerous critics have lambasted the national party chief for overseeing party spending at a lesbian-themed bondage club in West Hollywood and a series of verbal gaffes that cast the RNC in a general negative light.

Already, Republican state party chairs from Connecticut and Michigan have expressed serious interest in challenging Michael Steele.

However, an important down-ballot race is brewing that is important for the future of the Republican National Committee.

California’s party chair, Ron Nehring, has signaled his desire to stand for RNC treasurer. For the good of that post and for the hope of good upcoming years for Republicans, Nehring’s ascension cannot happen.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez forms 2014 Gubernatorial Committee

With growing doubts surrounding Jerry Brown’s highly competitive race for Governor, Congresswomen Loretta Sanchez announced yesterday she’s forming a Committee to raise money for a gubernatorial run in 2014.

With Jerry Brown running an uninspired campaign for Governor, jockeying for the 2014 nomination for Governor has already begun,” said Crystal Feldman, press secretary for the California Republican Party. “Nervous Democrats, uneasy over Brown’s likelihood of capturing the Governor’s office and extending his decades-long tenure on the California state payroll, are starting to hedge their bets. Even Brown’s supporters are showing uneasiness that he has no plan to create jobs, lacks any proven ability to manage budgets and protect taxpayers, and has no clear path to restore California’s economy. After 40 years in politics controlling Sacramento’s back rooms, it looks like Democrats are poised to issue Jerry his gold watch and move toward the next chapter.

CRP: Boxer Stays Mum on Rep. Waters Ethics Investigation

The “Two Buddies,  Partners” Recently Appeared Together

SACRAMENTO — U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer has stayed mum on ethics charges brought against her longtime friend and ally Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, despite recently touting their closeness.  The House Ethics Committee today announced that, having been under investigation since 2009, Waters is headed to a public trial on charges of ethics violations.

The two collegues appeared together a mere two weeks ago at an event in Inglewood, CA where Boxer detailed their close friendship: “When she came to the House, I went over to the Senate and we became buddies, partners. We call each other when there are tough issues. We help each other out.”
