Last week the Board of Education of the Rialto Unified School District voted to hire the law firm of Gutierrez, Fierro and Erickson to seek reimbursement from those who benefited from sweetheart deals with the school district. The law firm is tasked with determining which entities were awarded preferred contracts by the district.
In July 2013, the district contracted with the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) to review the district’s purchasing functions. FCMAT provided the district with its report in January of this year.
According to the report, FCMAT found several instances where district representatives may have benefited due to conflicts of interest. Procurement policies were often bypassed and credit card purchases were made outside of guidelines.
