This morning the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to appoint an ad hoc committee to make a recommendation to the full board for a replacement for Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Larry Walker. Walker announced his retirement on Jan. 13 after 38 years of service to the county.
The board appointed Chairman James Ramos and Vice Chairman Robert “Bob” Lovingood as the ad hoc committee members. Under the county’s charter, the board must make an appointment. The matter cannot go to a special election.
Upon news of Walker’s retirement, activists immediately expressed concerns that the board would hand the position to Matt Brown, Walker’s second in command. Brown is an unindicted co-conspirator in the ongoing Colonies Scandal and resulting criminal case. Investigators recommended he be indicted but the district attorney’s office did not seek indictment against him.
