(La Quinta) – La Quinta Councilman Stan Sniff has died at the age of 85 due to an undisclosed illness.  Sniff was a fixture on the city council continuously since 1986, making him the longest-serving council member in city history.  He served as Mayor Pro Tem first in 1991 and five times subsequently, most recently in 2006.  During his tenure Sniff did not miss a meeting until this past year when his health appeared to be declining.  He was not able to attend a special tribute to his life’s work two weeks ago.

Sniff lived in the Coachella Valley since 1928.  He was a date farmer in the valley and remained active with farming and land use issues throughout for more than 50 years.  According to the biography on the city of La Quinta’s website, “Council Member Sniff has served as the Vice Chair of the La Quinta Redevelopment Agency.  He serves on CVAG’s Energy & Environmental Resources Committee and the Coachella Valley Conservation Commission. He has been active in local retail, tourist and farming industries for over fifty years.”

(PALM SPRINGS) – For many of us September 11, 2001 seems like yesterday.  It is hard to believe that ten years has a passed since we woke to the news that the World Trade Center and Pentagon were under attack.  The Cold War had been over for more than a decade and few Americans still lived with the fear of being attacked by a foreign enemy on our own soil.

Like most Americans, those that we have elected to represent us have not forgotten what that tragic day has done to our country.  Here are a few excerpts from statements from Assemblyman Paul Cook and Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack was serving her first full term in Congress after having completed the previous term of her late husband, Sonny Bono.  In her statement today, she discusses the importance of freedom.

“For me, 9/11 brought Americans together like few other events in our lifetime.  I was only a mile or so away when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon at 9:37 in the morning.  I’ll never forget it,” Bono Mack said.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Bono Mack Offers Prayers for Japan Earthquake Victims

Washington, D.C. –  In the aftermath of today’s tragic events in Japan, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement reminding residents about the importance of being prepared in the event of a major earthquake:

“We are all saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by the devastating earthquake and sunami which have rocked Japan.  Our prayers go out to the victims, their families and every single person impacted by today’s horrific events.

“In the aftermath of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, we are painfully reminded of the importance of doing everything possible to be prepared when disaster strikes, as well as the life-saving potential of promising new technologies that can provide advanced warnings for our region.

“The Great California Shakeout and other readiness programs help prepare communities, first responders and organizations in the case of a major earthquake. I’ve seen firsthand how programs such as these increase understanding and awareness of the critically-important precautions and measures needed to deal with catastrophic events. Continue reading

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (C-45) today introduced legislation to abolish the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.  The center is overseen by the Department of Justice but, for the most part, funded by the Department of Defense.

The NDIC was established by Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 1983 and was placed under the control of the United States Attorney General.  It was created to “coordinate and consolidate drug intelligence from all national security and law enforcement agencies, and produce information regarding the structure, membership, finances, communications, and activities of drug trafficking organizations.”

According to its website, the NDIC currently employs 120 analysts who are assisted by detailees from the Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons.  The site states that its mission as “NDIC supports the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a component of the Executive Office of the President, by preparing assessments and providing briefs addressing drug issues of national concern. NDIC also provides analytical support to the ONDCP-designated High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTAs) to assist the HIDTAs in preparing their regional drug threat assessments.”

“It has become increasingly clear that international governmental organizations, such as the United Nations, have aspirations to become the epicenter of Internet governance. And I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this never happens.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Obamacare

U.S. Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack

Hi, I have some important news to share with you.

This week, we delivered on a promise.   The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to repeal government-run health care which was signed into law by President Obama in 2010 without any input from Republicans.   While it’s uncertain what will happen in the U.S. Senate, it’s time to go back to the drawing board and start over.  And we should begin by observing one important golden rule: the doctor-patient relationship is sacred.   Decisions about treatment options should be made by patients and their families – not by bureaucrats in Washington.   Instead, let’s do something novel: let’s take the best ideas of both Republicans and Democrats and give Americans the kind of common-sense reforms that enjoy wide-spread support here in California and across our nation.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: People Deserve Open House Congresswoman’s Bill Reflected in House Rules

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack

Washington, DC— This week, as the U.S. House of Representatives convenes for the 112th Congress, one of the first orders of business is to adopt the new rules of the House. Initiatives Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), the incoming Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, introduced last fall to make the House committee and subcommittee process more transparent and accountable to the people are present in the new rules package for the 112th Congress.

Incoming Chairman Bono Mack introduced H. Res. 1675 last fall, which would require live internet broadcasts of all markups of bills and resolutions in committees and subcommittees and provide the texts of these measures to be made accessible in a timely manner on the official, public committee websites. The Republican Conference adopted the rules package for the new Congress containing Bono Mack’s recommendations and the full House approved the rules Wednesday.

Matt Munson: The Question of Endorsements

Endorsements, candidates go for them like a kid at a candy store. Voters look for them as indicators that candidates are for or against policy positions. However when organizations are inconsistent with their mission statements it clouds the meaning of an endorsement in an election.

There are two endorsements I would like to call into question in California’s 2010 elections, endorsement of Mary Bono by the Log Cabin Republicans and the endorsement of Chris Lancaster by the California Republican Assembly. Continue reading

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Tax Relief

Bono Mack Introduces Tax Relief Bill for Those Left without Work

Washington, D.C. – In an effort to help provide tax relief for Americans facing extreme financial pressure in these tough economic times, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today introduced legislation (H.R. 4718) to suspend federal income taxes on those Americans who have been forced to collect unemployment compensation due to the loss of jobs and/or inability to find a new job as a result of the current tough economic climate.  Bono Mack issued the following statement:

“This legislation offers tax relief to individuals and families who have been hardest hit by this economic crisis and helps them with additional resources to make ends meet during these tough times,” said Bono Mack.  “Over 10% of Americans are currently unemployed and over 14% of local residents in Riverside County.  This bill will provide help at a time when individuals and families need it the most.

“Relieving the tax burden is an important part of the pro-growth policies that will help get our economy running again and get more Americans back to work.”

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Health Care

Bono Mack:  Partisan Health Care Overhaul is Wrong Approach

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Emphasizing overwhelming opposition to the partisan health care bill to initiate a government-run overhaul of America’s health care system, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today sent a letter to the President and Congressional Democrat leadership calling for a meaningful, bipartisan approach that will make health care more affordable and accessible to the American people.

“Congress should be focused on improving our health care system for every day Americans, not on scoring political points and pursuing a massive overhaul of health care that Americans have clearly rejected,” said Bono Mack.  “The Majority has the opportunity to do the right thing and work with all Members of Congress on health care reforms that are in the best interest of the American people, instead of putting the government in charge of medical decisions that should be made by patients and their doctors.

“As the daughter and granddaughter of physicians and Representative for a district that would greatly benefit from real health care reform, I urge the Majority leadership to reconsider this reckless decision to move ahead with such a partisan and fundamentally flawed piece of legislation.  This is not the ‘bipartisan’ approach that was promised.

“It is my hope that the Majority changes direction and reaches beyond partisan politics to craft a more balanced and effective bill that improves our health care system at a price we can afford.”

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Americans Need Jobs and a Healthy Economy, Not another Failed ‘Stimulus’

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of when the so-called “stimulus” bill was signed into law:

“One year after the Majority’s trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’, it is clear that this bloated spending package has failed to meet the needs of every day Americans,” said Bono Mack.  “Fraught with wasteful spending and big government programs, the ‘stimulus’ has left nearly 10 percent of Americans, and over 14 percent in Riverside County, without jobs and facing a record-high national deficit.

Congresswoman Bono Mack: Reckless Spending Must Stop

Washington, DC – Emphasizing that Washington needs to stop out-of-control and reckless spending, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement in opposition to House passage of a shocking $1.9 trillion (15.3 percent) debt increase:

“Congressional Democrats are proving that they are all talk, and no action when it comes to fiscal responsibility,” said Bono Mack.  “Raising the debt limit by 15.3 percent on the coattails of passing a massive new budget plan to fund bigger government is yet another shocking example of how out of touch Washington is with the needs of the American people. Congresswoman Bono Mack: President’s Budget Proposal Borrows, Spends Too Much

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement on the Administration’s $3.8 trillion budget proposal for fiscal year 2011:

“Despite recent calls for fiscal responsibility, the Administration’s budget proposal represents more of the same – reckless spending that piles on more debt and more taxes on every day Americans,” said Bono Mack.  “It is past time for Washington to get its budget under control – we cannot afford this aggressive expansion of government programs that only adds to our unsustainable budget outlook. Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack: Americans Need Solutions that Create Jobs and Boost our Economy

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today responded to the President’s jobs plan outlined today and emphasized her support for solutions that will create jobs and bring fiscal discipline to Washington:

“With unemployment at 10 percent nationally and over 14 percent in Riverside County, it is clear that the Administration and Congress must act on real solutions that will get Americans working again,” said Bono Mack.  “I welcome this renewed focus on the economy and job creation – the $1 trillion stimulus package, with its waste and focus on government spending, has fallen far short of America’s expectations and has not produced the jobs Americans so desperately need.
