When Hesperia city councilmen first inquired about the issue of cockfighting in their city, no one expected it would erupt into accusations that they were trying to rid Hesperia of horses, pigs and other animals. But that is exactly what happened thanks to the personal agendas of both city staff and those who support the illegal sport of cockfighting.
Hesperia is the gamecock-raising capital of southern California due to its flexible definition of “fowl” that does not differentiate between roosters and all other species of fowl that are not used for fighting. Within city limits, cockfighters can keep up to 150 roosters per acre, making the city a magnet for a blood sport that also attracts human trafficking, drugs, illegal gambling and gangs.
