California Congressman Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar) has introduced legislation to end birthright citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants.  Miller claims that the US government is put in a difficult position when it attempts to deport illegals who have under aged children who are citizens.

Opponents to the measure, such as Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto), claim the measure violates the 14th Amendment, which was one of three Reconstruction Amendments passed after the Civil War to outlaw slavery and grant equal rights to all males including slaves and their descendants.  Miller disagrees with this contention.

Apparently, not only do we have a problem with those who come to our country to work, but there are actually vacation planners who help mothers about to give birth to arrange their vacations here in the United States so that they will give birth on US soil, thus giving their children a lifetime of benefits.  Mexico, Korea and Turkey are among the countries where “birth tourism” is popular.

Several other nations have already ended birthright citizenship including Ireland, Australia and India.

  1. Citizenship from birth should only be provided if one or more parents are an american citizen.

And another idea is if you want to give birth in america, at least you should pay the whole cost for it, women who are visibly pregnant and do not have valid medical insurance or ways to pay for it should be forced back to their home nation.

  2. Anyone in here read the Constitution on this! your ass is showing gary…opps!

  3. The constitution intended this to cover the children of slaves. It never intended that the American taxpayer allow the surfeit of tax dollars by illegal immigrants.

  4. We are a country of immigrants, not of ilegal immigrants. Imagine how much better our country would have been if beginning with the amnesty of 1986, we had sealed our borders, but allowed 500,000 poor Mexicans and Central Americans to legally emigrate as long as they learned English, took basic civics courses, and abided by all tax and employment laws that the rest of us have to abide by.

We would have ended up with the same population that we have now, but we would have an immigrant population much more eager to become Americans. We would not have the duel economy where companies willing to break the law on employing illigal immigrants are allowed to outcompete honest companies.

There are a numner of institutions in our country that any objective analysis shows are unsustainable. The housing market of 2006 has already met reality. Next are Social Secrity and other retirement systems, the vlue of the dollar in general, and our immigration system.

  5. Isn’t this the same Gary Miller who gave Chris Lancaster $8,000 just days before Lancaster voted on Miller’s special interest project?
