I had a chance to stop and look at the nearly completed “Million Air” facility at San Bernardino International Airport (SBIA) yesterday.
Million Air granted a “franchise” to Scott Spencer. Spencer is the primary tenant at the airport.
Effectively, taxpayers built the facility and Million Air granted the use of its name. After all, why should they take any risk.
The Inland Valley Development Agency (IVDA) has spent some $130 million on converting the former military base to a civilian airport. SBIA has yet to attract any commercial passenger carrier after two years of empty promises by officials.
The struggles at SBIA come as nearby Ontario International Airport battles both shrinking flights and passenger traffic.
My initial take on the “Million Air” facility was what a mess. Especially at a cost in the tens of millions of dollars.
I don’t know what’s going on here, but the construction of the facility and workmanship is outrageous. At least the exterior. Continue reading →
