Paul Schrader has 27 years of law enforcement experience. During his time he has worked on problems that effect local issues and have shown positive crime reduction in areas. Paul shares his vision to assist the Department in lowering crime in high crime areas.
I detest politicians posting message after message. What is Paul Schrader up to now, 7 or so video messages? I was gong to watch the first on when I had time but now I am not planning to watch any of them. Only thing worse would be to fill up my mailbox and the landfill. Maybe he should tweet these thoughts instead.
Sorry about that Charlie Brown. We were going to put them on one video, but we broke it up to make easier for the viewer. Don’t give up on me. Since I am not a politician you will see me do things like this. Just trying connect. Hope I can get your vote on June 8th?
Paul
Paul,
I need to know more about you.
I have no links to SBSD other than I live in its jurisdiction.
some of the things I looked for on your web site but wasn’t clear are as follows.
1. How many years patrol/administration?
2. Whats your opinion on illegal immigration as it refers to LEO enforcement?
3. Supposing you win the election; how exactly will you clean up the department? i.e. attrition, forced retirements, firings.
Lastly, this comment on your website really struck me as creating a nanny state; could you comment on why you would want to infringe on Constitutional rights of privacy? “I will be exploring the possibility of using resources such video cameras in high-crime areas”

Hello just saying.
Here are the answers to your questions:
1. How many years patrol/administration?
Answer: 2 years as an investigator, 6 years working in corrections, 12 years patrol,
7 years in administration.
2. Whats your opinion on illegal immigration as it refers to LEO enforcement?
Answer: We will continue to partner with the federal immigration authorities to
identify illegal immigrants booked into County jails on criminal charges, so
they can be deported to their home countries after serving their sentences.
3. Supposing you win the election; how exactly will you clean up the department? i.e. attrition, forced retirements, firings.
Answer: I will be your next Sheriff;
I will meet with my executive staff the first week after I am sworn in. I will use this time to evaluate each executive and outline their duties and responsibilities. I will also ask if they can work for me.
I will then ask for an internal audit from all department heads, on spending, man power, assets, and inventory on hand. After I receive this audit, I will ask for an external audit.
I will meet with my captain’s the third week after I am sworn in. I will use this time to evaluate each captain and outline their duties and responsibilities. I will also ask if they can work for me.
During my first six months in office, I will use this time to evaluate the pros and cons of the Departments financial condition, so that we can better serve the community. I will also meet with line staff, to hear their impute regarding the Department.
From my experience and observation, during the first six months, 20% of the executive staff will retire for many reasons, mostly do to change. From the captains and below we would see
5%-8% of the staff leave . This reason would be because they were unable to make any changes in their work habits and would retire.
We would also see an average of 2% leave through attrition.
4. Lastly, this comment on your website really struck me as creating a nanny state; could you comment on why you would want to infringe on Constitutional rights of privacy? “I will be exploring the possibility of using resources such video cameras in high-crime area
Answer: I will be exploring the possibility of using resources such video cameras in high-crime areas, electronic monitoring systems, shot spotters, and an automatic license plate recognition system to identify stolen vehicles. The feasibility of adding K-9′s and volunteers into the ranks will also be explored.
These tools help fight crime and are a way to help stretch out resources. They are used in every city in the USA.
I hope I have answered your questions,
Paul Schrader
Paul, you don’t have to wait until you are sworn in to get some of the line staff’s opinion. Here it is. Our Dept. has problems. We have Deputies getting in trouble for plastic belt buckles on their sam brownes while Captains and Lieutenants are getting away with felonies and being covered up by the Dept. We have Deputies that are going through major IA’s over entitlements given to them per the MOU and when they find out the Deputy did nothing wrong, they are retaliated against by petty write ups. We have the executive staff coming out with policies on how Deputies have to wear their taser which now faces the suspect and makes it easy to grab. Meanwhile a probationary Detective who happens to be related to Captains pleads guilty to a crime in Arizona that bars him from carrying a gun in CA but he does not lose his rank or get sent back through the jail as most others would. They want all the Detectives and unmarked units in the county to start carrying rifles which is a good thing but they aren’t sure how they can pay for it. How about letting them buy and carry their own (so it doesn’t cost the Dept.)? We have numerous deputies in trouble for major crimes including bribery, stealing drugs, and trading sexual favors to get off on traffic stops but the investigations continue to get fouled up and the deputies get their jobs back. I could go on and probably will but we got problems.
Let me tell Paul this, Dick Williams spent more than his fair share of years working this County.
When he became Sheriff and attempted to change a few things, he was undermined by some within his own staff.
I really believe Mr.Scharder you will need to bring a couple trusted ones with you, so they can WATCH the ones who promise you that they will be able to work for you.
It would be like trying to have a democratic government in Iraq, but allowing half of the Sadaams high ranking Baath party members to stay in office.
It won’t work without some serious colateral damage.
Besides I am sure lower ranking employees will come out of the woodwork telling horror stories about the remaining staff.
Remember when our troops took control of Baghdad and the citizens took to the streets with shoes in hand and ran up to the fallen Sadaam statue?
What Sarge says is true though!!!!!!!
Paul, I worry about the use of “video cameras in high-crime areas”
Please tell me who is using video cameras (statically) so I can stay away from those areas.
The only place’s that come to mind are England (there’s a free country for you) and AZ for their highways; which by the way are costing the state millions defending them in court.
I agree with SGT that you don’t need to wait to find out who is with you and who will hinder you; your names on the ballot, if they wont deal with you now, they wont in the future.
I also agree with ACU; you will have to bring a few with you to help keep the place running.
But please learn from past mistakes (read OCSD), bring only those that have the highest moral compass. Dont ask for blind loyalty in those you bring along, ask for integrity up front; the loyalty stuff will be earned with time. And lastly (which I know you know), Its easier to clean house during the changing of the guard, than to maintain the status quo, and hope for a better outcome.

Ok Paul, I will not give up on you yet. I agree with use of video cameras in high crime areas, but I must say that I doubt they are as effective as people think, only because a large number of cameras will be required. Where they are used, I suspect crime will drop, but it will only shift to other areas. I read your statements about evaluating the department. Sounds like an outsider’s view of the department. Nothing wrong with the approach, but I need to ask. Will the actions result in fewer command positions in administration or will you fill those positions after the current staff leave?
Paul, I also suggest for you to reread your posts before submitting to check closely for spelling and grammar. I am sure you know the difference between meet and met, but used the wrong word more than once in your posting. The public is not very forgiving of electeds who have problems communicating correctly.
Hey Paul, I like the way you sound. I am a Crestline resident and we have a local website / blog called http://www.rimoftheworld.net You might like to check it out and post on it.
Thanks Gary, I have posted on it. I hope to get the endorsement from the paper. I will post more and if you want, please post my web site info http://www.sheriffpaul.net when you get a chance.
A few months back I contacted Paul Schrader with the idea of volunteering my time to video his message. I really liked his vision and values. I have never worked with anyone running for political office.
I was the one who decided to break up the videos into short segments, this way our viewers could pick and choose the topic to watch. Also, most viewers zone out after 3 minutes.
I spent close to four hours with the Schraders in video production and at lunch. I now consider them my friends. Paul is the real deal, and he means what he says. Win or lose, I support the Schraders!

I’ve been onboard withSchrader from the beginning. As I told him his wife made a great campaign manager. Paul, you have my email address from the 9-12 Patriot website. If you send me your address I will send you Sheriff Mack’s book and I’d love to have you as my guest at the upcoming Freedom Conference in Ontario. Sheriff Mack is our guest speaking Sunday night and I’d love to introduce you.
Patricia, thanks for the kind words. My email address is sheriffpaul@charter.net. I would love to come to your conference. Several folks have sent me his book. I am on board with Mack. We share a lot of the same understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Thanks…Paul
