Dear Friend:
One of my top priorities as a United States Senator has been to ensure the health and safety of our children. That is why I recently called for quick action on the health concerns in Kettleman City, where federal, state and local officials are investigating the causes of a spate of birth defects and infant deaths.
There are reports of higher than usual birth defects and infant deaths in Kettleman City, located in Kings County. While a possible connection to a nearby hazardous waste site is being investigated, many residents have called for both further investigation of a connection and for a delay in the expansion of that site.
It is clear that federal, state and local officials must move quickly to address the health concerns of residents in Kettleman City. We need to take several steps immediately. First, we should not expand the hazardous waste facility until we have more conclusive results on the potential health impacts on the local community. Second, I am fighting to secure funding through the Recovery Act to build a water treatment plant to make sure residents have safe water to drink. Third, we need to make sure that all necessary steps are taken to identify the cause of these birth defects so we can protect the residents of Kettleman City.
My staff and I will continue to remain engaged in this important public health issue.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
